Angry Birds is one of the most successful games on the iOS platform and now the game is trying to repeat its success on Google’s [NSDAQ:GOOG] Android mobile platform. The original iOS version has sold over 6.5 million copies — a huge number for a game that is only playable on certain iOS devices. It also speaks for the number of such devices out there. And now it is Android’s turn.

Coming from Rovio instead of Chillingo as on the iOS, Angry Birds landing on the Android OS has been less than smooth. There was a small controversy regarding name-squatting on the platform thanks to a practical jokes app that already was there on Android under the same name. This app was later changed to ‘Angry Birds Joke’ in order to give Rovio a clear line for their version of the Angry Birds.

The currently available version on the platform is a Lite Beta version, which is mainly here to set  the stage for the full game to arrive as a paid version. This version is of course, a free app. Despite the ‘Lite’ tag — users have been posting enthusiastic reviews of the game. It seems from their reports that the Android version is actually in a resolution that is higher than the original iOS game. This is probably a side-effect of the re-building of the game from the ground up for Android.

The total reboot of the developmental process to port an app from iOS to Android and vice-versa — is the main reason why we do not get to see too many cross-platform apps currently. Only companies and apps with large followings have enough resources to release on multiple platforms and maintain all of them together. Many hope that the future will see a convergence of these platforms but that is unlikely to happen as long as the current market mechanics are valid.
