Netflix is showing signs of releasing an app for the Android platform — a news which will surely make a lot of Android lovers happy. The DVD rental company has already released an for Apple’s iPad and releasing something for the Android is the next logical step. Especially with so many tablets being released with some form of Android on them and rumors of the next Android release (Gingerbread) having support for tablets too.
The news started circulating earlier this week that Netflix is definitely working on an Android app. They posted a job opening for an Android engineer to “build Instant Streaming client implementations on Android devices.” Of course, it could be for any kind of device and not necessarily a smartphone. But right now, with multiple powerful Android phones coming in to the market one by one — Netflix should have enough reason by now to release an Android app. However, they can also tie up with companies once Android Gingerbread releases and release exclusively for tablet devices.
A spokesperson from Netflix confirmed that the job has been posted. But then declined to comment on it. However, even with the company declining to comment, this is one of those situations where there is no two ways about it. They are definitely working on an Android app. The job description requires the candidate to have “a strong background in embedded and mobile development, specifically on media-enabled devices,” and also 10 years of software development experience. This is surely not a small time development job.
Netflix’s chief Reed Hastings has also recently underlined at an earnings call that the company is slowly turning from a DVD-by-mail rental company to an online streaming service. Apple’s iPad users can already watch companies full streaming library online. Looks like Apple’s streaming service, for which they intend to use Lala prpgrammers, will have competition.
