Over the air app installation for Android is now a legitimate feature on the Android OS 2.2. But it is not yet available to everybody and for many it will be a while before it gets to them. A long while in some cases. This is why a third-party solution that serves the same end is a welcome news for all Android users. Also, especially for those who can’t install FroYo (2.2).
AppBrain is an app that was already known for syncing your installed apps with a list of your wanted list on the web. This was so far as close Android users could get to a over the air installation. But it was far from being a one-click smooth affair. You still had to go to the Market from your to get the apps you wanted installed your phone.
Now, AppBrain has introduced a new plug-in for itself. It is called Instant Web Installer and it does exactly what the name suggests it does. Instead of going through your mobile phone, you go in through the AppBrain market, find an app you like and there you have an Install button that you can click for instant download on to your phone. Proper over-the-air app installation for Android users. Oh joy!
Look at the video above for a proper explanation of how it works. It is pretty simple actually.
But there’s still one thing that might bother a lot of users — security and privacy. AppBrain accesses your phone through your Google login and it never actually sees your password. Their privacy policy, though slightly lacking, seems to cover all the necessary points. AppBrain’s developers already have over around 25 different apps in the Market and all of them are in the utility category, so they seem to be a serious outlet.
But still, this is a pretty low level access you are granting. So use at your own discretion.
