Moodagent from Syntonetic was originally launched for the iPhone. It is a very interesting app that I had covered earlier elsewhere. It is essentially an app that plays music dependent on what kind of mood you are in. Not, it does not involved wires sticking out from your brain and being fed into the phone. It simply has 5 sliders that represent 5 different moods. It is by sliding these up and down that you get to mix up your music just the way you like it. And now this experience can be had on you Android phone as well.
Moodagent’s emotional understanding works via their own database of profiles. Once you install the app on your phone, it scans your music collection and matches each song to the database of profiles. These profiles are what determine what moods a particular song represents. It is only after this process is done that you can start using the app the way it is meant to be used.
Using the app is actually quite simple — you just need to use the sliders to generate you own custom mix of emotions. The five emotions the sliders represent are — Sensual, Tender, Happy, Angry and Tempo. Using these sliders is fairly straightforward and intuitive. You can also customize your playlists by locking songs to playlists, saving them and banning certain tracks/artists from appearing. You can also choose one song and use that as the ‘seed’ for the rest of the playlist, letting the app match other songs to it.
This somewhat like iTunes Genius playlists but with the emotional twist. But how accurate is it? Well, the company claims to be adding the profiles constantly. But it will of course not be able to recognize every song that is out there. So if you tend to listen to freshly released, rare sounds, you might not have as much luck.
