At long last, Tweetdeck has decided to make an app for the Android users. After news of the official Twitter client, a lot of Twitter apps suddenly faded into the background for a lot of people because frankly some of the simpler twitter apps didn’t really do much anyway. With an official client on the Marketplace, there was no way they could survive. But Tweetdeck is another story. They have a very strong following across multiple platforms (including both desktop and mobile) and a lot of Android users have been pining for the company to release an Android app.

Tweetdeck has announced that it is working on an Android app but that is not at the top of the company’s priority list, which is a slightly weird statement to make when you are making an announcement like this. But it looks like they are doing this to appease a part of their followers and their main focus is somewhere else entirely.

Tweetdeck is busy making a mobile web application that will have all the features of the desktop app presumably, including the UI. They want to make it browser based so that anyone and everyone can access it from anywhere in the world — unrestricted by platforms. Looks like the cross-platform and platform-agnostic bugs have bitten them too. Not that that is a bad thing. This is good news for mobile twitter users everywhere.

Coming back to the Android Tweetdek app, it will be missing one feature that I am sure you wanted — background processing. The Tweetdeck Android app will not be able to run in the background. The developers say this is to make it more energy efficient so as to not suck out your battery life whilst you weren’t looking. But it is a feature that will be missed.

Update: So the TweetDeck Community Manager, Richard Barley, corrects us (in the comments section) that the app described here is actually meant for the platforms that don’t already have a native app. Their Android app will be by all means a native app and will have all the features that we expect to find in one. And yes, he says it will have background processing. We like!
