Orkut is Google’s social networking site that didn’t really take off in the US or anywhere else for that matter, with the due exceptions of Brazil and India. In those two countries it is quite big with a lot of people using the service. it is no competition to Facebook or Twitter though. And now Android users who use Orkut have a reason to rejoice because now there’s an app for Orkut.

The Orkut app, just like the Facebook app, gives the user full access to all the site features via a mobile interface. Users will get scrap notifications and will be able to upload photo directly to their Orkut albums using the app. The app will also sync up the users Android phone book with data mined from Orkut. Thus all your Orkut friends will added to your phonebook along with their phone numbers.

This app also enables users to choose to display their Orkut friends’ list on the homescreen simply as a live folder. This folder is synced on to the phone, allowing offline browsing when the phone is not connected to the internet. The live folder not only provides a shortcut to the Orkut friends’s list, it also allows the user to communicate with friends at just one click. This live folder can be added via the Menu>Add>Folders>Orkut path. Of course, you will need to install the app first.

All photos from the Android photo gallery can be uploaded directly without jumping through any hoops. Orkut becomes part of the menu. So  after installing the app, if you go to the photo gallery, you can share any photo there by going to menu>share>orkut. It is that easy.

The app is currently available in the Android Marketplace as ‘Orkut’ and falls under the ‘Social Applications’ category. Android 1.6 or higher is required to run this app. It is available free of cost.
